Last year, Amazon decided to undercut competitors by launching Amazon Drive in the US – offering unlimited cloud storage for a monthly price of $5 (£3.70).
Nine months later, the e-commerce giant is rolling out its unlimited storage plan in the UK for a flat rate of £55 a year (which roughly comes down to £4.50 a month).
The plan comes with a free three-month trial for eligible customers.
“Most people have a lifetime of photos from birthdays, holidays and everyday moments stored across numerous devices – and a lot of those people don’t know how many gigabytes they need to back all those memories up, or what it’s going to cost,” said David Nenke, director of Amazon Drive.
“With our new unlimited storage plan, that’s no longer something customers need to worry about.
“They now have an affordable, secure solution to store unlimited amounts of photos, videos, movies, music, and other files in one place — with no tiered storage options or rising fees to worry about.”
Prime members, who already have unlimited photo storage as part of their membership, will be able to add the plan to their Amazon Drive accounts, while existing Amazon Drive customers should be able to change their plan by signing into their accounts and selecting the free Unlimited Storage trial.
Microsoft currently offers 1TB of storage on OneDrive for £5.99 a month, alongside full installed Office applications, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, while Google offers 1TB storage for £7.99 a month and 30TB storage for a monthly fee of £239.99 on Google Drive.
And those who have Apple’s iCloud, can buy additional storage at a cost of £6.99 for 1TB.
