Apple wants Apple TV to be a 'unified TV experience' and has the new app to prove it

Apple has unveiled a new app for the Apple TV that it says offers a “unified TV experience”.

Called TV, the app will also work across iPhone and iPad, and enables users to search for TV shows and movies from their iTunes library as well as other apps. The app includes a Watch Now section where all a user’s available content is displayed, and is able to start streaming from within other video apps.

However, there is one pretty big caveat for keen streamers – the new app does not support Netflix or Amazon Video. Rivals yes, but also a big chunk of some of the best content, too.

Netflix hasn’t ruled out joining at some point, according to Wired, but for now neither is there.

Apple’s Eddy Cue, though, is confident about what the tech giant has to offer: “Using apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad has become the primary way for so many of us to watch television.

“The TV app shows you what to watch next and easily discover TV shows and movies from many apps in a single place.”

As well as the new TV app, Apple also revealed a partnership with Twitter that will enable Apple TV users in the US to see social media streams alongside sporting events as they are happening live.

A new feature using Apple’s voice-powered assistant Siri was also announced. Called Live tune-in, it can find live news and sport based on a single voice command – taking users directly to the stream and relevant app once prompted.
