It seems Millennials love their phone way too much to be putting it away in their pockets when they are at gigs watching their favourite artists play.
A survey by online phone retailer Mobiles.co.uk suggests that we are more interested in getting as many ‘Likes’, ‘Favourites’ and ‘Retweets’ as possible on social media rather than enjoying the event and listening to the musicians play… despite splurging our hard-earned cash on the tickets.
The poll, in which 1,000 people took part, reveals 18-24 year olds are the worst offenders when it comes to using their phones at gigs, with more than three-quarters admitting doing it on a regular basis.
Ironically, they seemed to be the ones who were most vocal about opposing the use of smartphones at gigs, with 52% saying that mobiles should be totally banned at live music events.
More than a fifth of those surveyed said taking photos, videos and updating their statuses were all designed to get approval on social media, with 23% checking in their location through their phone to prove to their friends and followers that they attended the event.
A very small number (one in 10) of those surveyed said their social media activities at gigs were about raising awareness of their favourite musicians, bands or venues.
And it seems men are worse than women when it comes to shameless self-promotion on social media, with 88% admitting to using their smartphones during the gig to post updates, compared with 54% of women.
So are you a gig goer who is way too captivated by your phone screen to get involved in live music events?
