The official BBC Sport app is getting much more personalised, thanks to an update expected this week that will create a new news front page for users.
My Sport will serve as a new, alternative homepage which users can fill with the sports teams and news that most interests them. Think of it as an extension of the existing My Alerts feature, except rather than just push notifications, there’s a dedicated home page now as well.
The BBC says this new set-up will automatically sync across all your devices with the BBC Sport app, and has more than 300 topics across more than 50 sports that can be added to the My Sport homepage.
As well as entire sports, individual teams can be added – just like the existing Alerts section.
At a time when personalised new aggregators are becoming increasingly popular it appears a smart move to make BBC Sport more adaptable for users. Apps such as Flipboard have become major successes on the Apple App Store and Google Play – with Google News now doing something similar, while Apple has launched Apple News in the US. Both of which can be fully customised.
The update is coming to both iOS and Android, and is expected to make the jump to the web too. This is being done through a new sign-in feature, which when used on the desktop, will see a user’s My Sport page appear before them.
The My Sport page you build will also be used to recommend content from BBC iPlayer, with a sign-in then seeing programme suggestions appearing on your home page too.
