Could Nintendo be planning a SNES mini to replace the NES mini this year?

The hole left by the surprise cancellation of the NES mini could be filled sooner than expected, with reports circulating that Nintendo is planning a SNES mini for the end of this year.

Eurogamer is claiming sources close to the company have told them a shrunken down version of the SNES – Super Nintendo Entertainment System – which was first released in the UK in 1992, is in Nintendo’s plans for later this year.

Their report claims Nintendo’s plan with the NES mini was always to only ship the tiny console as a novelty item during the Christmas 2016 period and never intended to sell it as a permanent product.

This would explain the sudden discontinuation of a product that had proved a smash hit with consumers, and potentially pave the way for the SNES to pick up the mantle at the end of 2017.

For many hardcore gamers this would be a more exciting launch than the NES too – given that it was the SNES that had A Link To The Past – considered by many the best game in the Legend Of Zelda series, as well as Super Mario Kart and Star Fox.

Nintendo hasn’t commented on the rumours themselves, but many fans will live in hope of another wave of console nostalgia later this year.
