EA keeps it simple in its GamesCom briefing

Electronic Arts knows which of its franchises its fans love – and so it showered us with them in its short and sweet GamesCom briefing.

The heavyweight titles of the coming year: Need for Speed, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, FIFA 16 and, of course, Star Wars Battlefront were placed front and centre of the show – with plenty of new features and gameplay footage offered up to tantalise gamer taste buds.

Here are the major points from the briefing.

Need for Speed

Already looking a potent reboot, EA told us today about the different stars of Need for Speed – the live action characters that bookend the action. Each one has their own traits, and can teach their style to you in order to hone your driving skills. But above all that, you can’t get away from just how good this game looks.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

A real high point of the show, EA gave us five whole minutes of gameplay for the new Mirror’s Edge. We saw Faith doing what she does best, free-running like a boss, as well as getting a look at the stunning city-scape and interiors that you’ll be moving through.

Unravel

The hugely popular Yarni – star of Unravel – was back too, and again we were treated to a gameplay demo on the different ways you can move through the various levels of the game.

Star Wars Battlefront

The big news on Battlefront was the announcement of Fighter Squadron – a 20-player multiplayer experience set in the various aircraft of the Star Wars universe. As the trailer shows, the dogfights look intense, frenetic and a lot of fun. Roll on November.

FIFA 16

Seeing as GamesCom takes place in Europe, it’s probably only right that EA ended with FIFA 16. The new FIFA Ultimate Team Draft looks like a very good way to get people using that feature of the game. Some tweaks to the gameplay modes were also shown off.

So a promising burst of content for EA as the show doors in Cologne open. With the Star Wars Fighter Squadron multiplayer on the show floor, they won’t be short of visitors either.
