Swedish furniture giant Ikea is making its first venture into virtual reality with a new app that will enable users to try out new kitchen designs before buying them.
The free app will be available on Steam – making it compatible with the HTC Vive which runs on the Steam gaming platform.
The app enables users to step into different kitchen designs and walk around them and interact with different objects and items within them.
Not only that, but users can even change their size so as to experience the layout from the perspective of a child as well as an adult.
The colour and design of cabinets and worktops can be altered too.
“Virtual reality is developing quickly and in five to 10 years it will be an integrated part of people’s lives,” said Ikea’s Jesper Brodin.
“We see that virtual reality will play a major role in the future of our customers. For instance, some day it could be used to enable customers to try out a variety of home furnishing solutions before buying them.”
2016 is a huge year for virtual reality, as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR all reach consumer hands for the first time.
