It’s tough keeping the romance alive when in a long-distance relationship, but these two common seals, who fell for each other at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, seem to be making it work…
Staff were super surprised after the pair conceived two pups – Mum Sija was on the contraceptive pill and Dad Babyface is getting on a bit (in seal years) at the age of 37. To stop any more surprises, the pair were torn apart last May and moved into sanctuaries 160 miles away from each other.
After seven years of living together, Sija’s new home is a female-only enclosure in Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park, and Babyface remains the resident lothario at the sanctuary in Cornwall.
While trainers say she is “thriving and happy” in Weymouth, they didn’t want Sija missing her old friend too much.
Fiona Smith, the displays curator at Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park, said: “At first the seals were both unsure about the iPad, but once they saw each other they nosed up to it, which was really nice to see.
“It’s definitely the most hi-tech enclosure we have at Weymouth Sea Life, so we’re really pleased that SealTime is a success.”
While staff are happy with the results, this one guy was not so positive…
However most people tweeting about SealTime were very excited about the future of Sija and Babyface. And who knows what animals will be video calling each other in the future?
Let’s just hope the pair stay this cute with each other…
