A man who wanted to share the birth of his child with family and friends via Facebook Live didn’t realise he’d made the broadcast public, and has now clocked up more than 250,000 views.
Kali Kanongata’a, from California, was hoping to capture the magical moment his partner gave birth for the benefit of their family and friends. But because he didn’t check his Facebook privacy settings properly, the rather intimate video ended up being publicly available to watch.
After realising his error, Kali considered taking the video down “for a second”, but then chose to leave it up as he felt there is “a lot of negative stuff on Facebook and so I thought this would be positive”, he told People.
The 35-minute video shows Kali’s partner Sarah in the latter stages of labour, with Kali filming from her bedside using Facebook Live, the live streaming video service that launched on the social network earlier this year.
Though intending to push the video to a small audience, the default settings for a Facebook Live video see broadcasts made very public.
Not only that, but there’s also a Live map on Facebook that enables users to find and jump in to any broadcast around the world as it’s happening.
Anyone who clicked on Kali’s broadcast might have been rather surprised to find themselves in the midst of a delivery room.
