It seems that even employees at Netflix are hit by the occasional pang of video store nostalgia.
Remember when to watch a film or box set you had to make your way down to Blockbuster, browse the options, hope they still had copies available, speak to an actual person, make your way home, and, finally, pop the video into the VCR before settling on the sofa with some toffee popcorn? It was hard work.
We’re glad those days are over, not least because after all that you then had to remember to return the video.
Streaming sites like Netflix mean you have a whole catalogue of films and series at the end of your finger but for their spring Hack Day they threw it back and forwards at the same time, creating a virtual-reality video store.
We’d miss video stores way more if they had the dramatic Daredevil music following you around everywhere like in this video, and if you got to throw your video at a wall to signal you were interested in renting it. That’s why you’re out of business, Blockbuster.
Netflix’s techies created the store as part of their bi-annual Hack Day, which is meant to give staff a chance to experiment with new technology and ideas.
