The colourful Joy-Con controllers on the Nintendo Switch are set to become even more eye-catching this summer when they launch in neon yellow.

The controllers, which can be attached at detached from the side of the console’s screen at will, including come in a bright blue and red combo, but Nintendo has decided to up the ante.

It’s all in honour of one of the Switch’s big summer releases – fighting game ARMS – which will be launched alongside special edition neon versions of the modular controller on June 16.

The announcement was part of a Nintendo Direct event where the Japanese gaming giant not only confirmed that ARMS launch date, but also the impending release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which will go on sale on April 28.

That release could spark a new wave of interest in the Switch, which aside from excitement surrounding the latest edition in the Legend of Zelda saga – Breath of the Wild – which was a launch day title for the console, has failed to maintain sustained hype around its games line-up.

Also among the announcements was a release date for Splatoon 2 – the octopus ink multiplayer shooting game that took the Wii U by storm when it launched in 2014. It will be available on July 21, and Nintendo also revealed the sequel will have a new four-player co-op mode called Salmon Run for players to tackle.

Not only that, but Minecraft will make the jump to Switch on May 12, complete with the themed Super Mario Mash-Up pack for players to make their Minecraft saves on Switch suitably Nintendo-themed.

A host of indie games were also confirmed for Switch launch this summer as the console continues to boost its catalogue of titles, but a bumper load of announcements is expected at E3, the biggest games trade show in the industry calendar, in Los Angeles in June.

That show should prove one of the most exciting in recent years, with Xbox set to unveil their super-powered Project Scorpio console during the same event – making it a very good time to be a gamer.
