Robots taking human jobs is an issue that some believe to be a very real problem for the years to come, however one Canadian firm has created a bot that could take over one job we wouldn’t miss – stock-taking.

Built using Segway technology, the Space Genius is a tall, thin robot that moves down aisles in stores, scanning items as it goes. Not only can the robot log the amount of items in place, it can also track location and tag details to ensure everything in store is in the right place. It can scan an entire supermarket in less than an hour according to the developers.

As manufacturer 4D Retail Technology suggests, the data the Space Genius can feed back has the potential to change “I think” to “I know” when customers ask about an item being in stock.

The Space Genius also carries out 3D mapping, and as a result can create a complete layout of stores, which could then be used by customers to find goods they’re looking for.

This is more than just far-off technology too, as 4D Retail are already offering demonstrations to businesses who wish to see the Space Genius in action.
