Having launched a virtual reality headset, Samsung appears to have already turned its attentions to another possible future technology trend – smart contact lenses.
The Korean smartphone and appliance giant has been granted a patent for smart contact lenses that could contain a camera, movement sensors, transmitter and display unit according to reports.
They also suggest that this smart eye wear would work in conjunction with a smartphone, with the user able to issue commands by blinking. Thanks to the display unit, photos and videos from your smartphone could also be viewed through the lenses.
This type of set-up is known as augmented reality – it’s not new – Microsoft is leading the way with its HoloLens headset, while the now discontinued Google Glass also used a similar way of presenting data.
Google is actually already working on smart contact lenses themselves too. The technology giant is involved in a partnership with Swiss medical firm Novartis, and have already discussed plans to make lenses that can monitor glucose levels in tears as part of monitoring diabetics.
