A new wearable claims it can re-train wearers so they can sleep better, and even guide them through the “perfect power nap” to boost alertness.
Thim is a smart ring that connects to a user’s phone to monitor sleep – not a new concept. However, the Thim claims it can help improve user sleep too, but does so in an unusual way: by waking them up.
Research has suggested that falling asleep over and over in a process known as sleep re-training can actually condition people to fall asleep more quickly. So when worn at night the Thim can track when a wearer dozes off and then uses small vibrations to gently wake them up again every three minutes over a short period of time – before kindly letting them sleep through the night.
The result is up to 70 minutes more sleep, researchers say, as well as dozing off up to half an hour quicker. This has been packaged into Thim.
The 3D-printed ring is now on Kickstarter and is steadily moving towards its funding goal, having raised more than 90,000 Australian dollars (£55,000) of a 120,000 target at the time of writing.
