Sony admits PlayStation VR won't have the "high-end quality" of Oculus Rift

Sony’s PlayStation VR won’t be able to match Facebook-owned Oculus’ Rift headset, according to PlayStation’s executive vice president Masayasu Ito.

In an interview with gaming site Polyson, Ito said PlayStation’s own device won’t have the “high-end quality” of the Rift, but added that they’re going to be very different products.

“If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR,” he said.

“However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It’s more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable. This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It’s for the mass market.”

Sony is holding an event on March 15, during the Game Developers Conference in the US to reveal more information about PlayStation VR, possibly even revealing a price and a release date. The Rift has been priced at £499 and, as Ito suggested, you still need a gaming PC after that to get it running.

Sony Computer Entertainment chief Andrew House has also said PS VR will cost around the same as a “new gaming platform”, which gives many hope that the headset could be available for around £400.
