Ahead of its launch as a consumer product next year, Sony has renamed its Project Morpheus virtual reality headset, with the device now going by the name PlayStation VR.
Morpheus has been in development for more than two years, and Sony has previously said it will go on sale to the public some time next year, and this move to abandon the headset’s codename in favour of something more commercially obvious appears to confirm that timeline.
The announcement was made during Sony’s press conference at the Tokyo Game Show.
PlayStation VR faces plenty of competition in the virtual reality space, especially from the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift, and the Vive, developed by HTC and gaming platform Valve. Both are also set for full consumer release at some point, but Sony will be hoping the PlayStation name will help it gain some leverage.
