Eels tend to fall into the same category as snakes – coming across one while swimming is probably unlikely to be a calm experience for you.

But science and technology thinks there’s plenty to admire about how these creatures move through the water, and now a series of Norwegian companies have come together to create a prototype robot that can move through the water in the same sweeping motion, without requiring any thrust.

The results are chilling, yet eerily impressive.

The aim is to use the bots to carry out surveillance and small maintenance on deep sea infrastructure – the bots even have mouths that can be used to tighten screws.

That’s us not swimming for a while.
