EA has opened Gamescom in Germany with a first look at FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT), one of the most popular features within the football game series.
Ultimate Team is the game’s online mode that involves trading players as cards as users build towards their best squad. In FIFA 17, due out next month, EA Sports has now revealed exactly what to expect from this year’s title, including a series of new features.
A very reward-heavy, almost puzzle-like new feature that involves players having to build squads that meet certain requirements based on chemistry, range of nationalities and beyond. Complete challenges and players get a reward in return, ranging from in-game coins and player packs to boosted rating cards of star players. It looks very different for FIFA, but is bound to have its fans.
On the competitive side of things, FIFA 17 also sees the introduction of FUT Champions.
This is based around the existing online tournaments, but extends them further by rewarding those who do well with a place in new Weekend Leagues. These are ranked, with greater rewards the higher you can climb through the leagues and rankings.
As part of a planned year of online tournaments, EA Sports revealed that a range of Ultimate Team Championship Series events, culminating in the Interactive World Cup, will have a total prize pot of 1.3 million US dollars (£1 million). All that, just from playing FIFA.
10 new Legends, exclusive to Xbox legends, were also revealed to be joining FIFA, including Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand. Carlos Puyol, Juan Sebastian Veron and Jamie Carragher are also in the new pack.
The likes of Kasabian, Major Lazer and Damian Marley are among the musicians who have designed special kits that will also be available in the game for those who pre-order, pushing taste to the limits in some cases.
