Speedrunning, to those not familiar, is the idea of completing a video game in the shortest possible time.
Spend time on YouTube or Twitch and you can find thousands of examples of people doing just that – flying through games at impressive speed. Now, Late Show host Stephen Colbert – who is a big gaming fan – has brought the practice to the masses with a segment on a recent show where he challenged the Super Mario Bros. 3 world record holding speedrunner, Mitch Fowler.
It was all in aid of Summer Games Done Quick, a festival of gamers racing through all manner of games in ridiculous times. But not only that, it was a pretty cool introduction to a niche pocket of the gaming world that not everyone might have been aware of.
