Scientists from Stanford University have created a team of tiny robots strong enough to tow a full-sized car.

The six microbots are the result of research at the California university into how ants are able to lift and pull up to 100 times their own body weight, as well as work in unison to lift greater weights than that.

As the video shows, the ant-like microrobots have been created to constantly apply force so they work well together. In this instance, meaning the six bots can successfully move a two-tonne car despite only weighing around 100g each.

It’s a combination of a pulley system and some footpads on each bot inspired by the toes of geckos.
