You may know internet sensations Niki and Sammy Albon from their addictively entertaining videos on YouTube.
The twins’ online channel NikiNSammy, which have more than 146,000 subscribers and over nine million views, are filled with wacky challenges and loads of amazing LOL moments.
But recently the pair took on a different type of challenge that involved teaching an 85-year-old the wonderful yet complex world of the internet and modern technology for Sky1′s OAP Internet Virgins. And that made them oddly curious about what technology was like before before they were born.
So the 23-year-olds decided to roll back the decades and check out some ancient technology themselves – and managed to find a 30-year-old computer to test their retro gaming skills.
But what did the web-savvy twins make of the Acorn Electron’s unbearably long loading times and primitive 8-bit graphics?
Here’s a hint – Niki and Sammy won’t be scouring retro gaming shops any time soon.
So back to the comforting realms of modern technology – how did they get along with their octogenarian student George Penfield?
“We came at it thinking that George had no knowledge of the internet at all,” said Niki. “He’d been going to a computer club with his friends. But he didn’t know much – he knew that Google existed, he knew about email and log-on but that was more or less the extent of his knowledge.”
Which meant the vloggers had a fair bit of work on their hands.
“We take everything for granted – like printing and searching on the internet, but for George, was all a new experience,” said Sammy. “So breaking it down to the basics and building upon simple things like unlocking your iPad or buying a song – it took some time.”
So did George learn to stream songs on the iPad and do his grocery shopping online?
Sorry, we can’t give you any spoilers.
OAP Internet Virgins starts tonight on Sky 1 at 8pm.
