"Doing it for Dad": Islander takes on 10 running challenges in 10 months

Wednesday 31 July 2024

An islander who is taking on ten running challenges in ten months in memory of his father who died ten years ago is set to take on his eighth – and the most gruelling yet – this weekend.

BBC Jersey journalist Christopher Craddock has already raised nearly £1,500 for Cancer Research UK, smashing his initial target of £1,000.

Some of the challenges he has completed so far include running up and down Bouley Bay Hill, the steepest climb in Jersey, five times in January; running one of the toughest trail half marathons in Jersey, aptly called El Diablo, in March; completing a 40-mile trail race along Jersey's undulating north coast in May; and the Guernsey Island Walk in June.

His biggest, and most brutal, challenge yet will be the 'Round the Rock' ultramarathon which takes place on Saturday.

Participants have to make it around the 48-mile course with 4,500 feet of elevation within 12 hours.

A relative newbie to trail running, Chris said he had never done an ultramarathon before starting the ten-month challenge, and the training has been tough.

But it is all for a reason.

Writing on his donation page, he said: "[Dad] Paul is my biggest inspiration and was the warmest, friendliest, and most passionate person you could ever meet.

"The man could talk the hind legs off a donkey!

"He died way too soon from cancer and kidney problems.

"To mark a decade since Dad's death, I'm doing 10 challenges each month for 10 months in Jersey, Guernsey, and England."

The fundraising marathon ends in October, where Chris will attempt to finish the Jersey Marathon – the only race he has ever pulled out of – in under four hours.
