30 people grab a jab in Royal Square pop-up

Tuesday 03 August 2021

30 people ‘rocked up’ to Royal Square to receive their first dose of the covid vaccine yesterday.

The jabs were given in a new mobile vaccination unit, which will be travelling to different locations around the island this week in a bid to get more islanders protected against covid.

Dubbed 'Rock Up', the scheme, which started yesterday, will also see unscheduled jabs offered at Springfield, Five Oaks, the Kiosk and Les Quennevais across the week.

An ambulance will arrive at each location with a team of medics, and islanders will be able to get jabs there without an appointment on a first-come-first-served basis.

30 islanders took the opportunity to get an injection at the Royal Square as the scheme launched in the Royal Square yesterday, and its hoped dozens more will follow today at the Royal Square (11:30 to 14:00) and Springfield Stadium (17:00 to 18:30).

Meanwhile, officials confirmed to Express this morning that a total of 219 islanders made use of last week's walk-in vaccination initiative at Fort Regent

Both 'Rock Up' and the walk-ins were part of a big push to get more young people vaccinated, with take-up significantly lagging among the under-30s.

According to the latest data, 27% of islanders aged 18 to 29 are still yet to up the offer of a covid vaccine.

Speaking last week about the new initiatives, Vaccination Programme Operations Lead Ross Barnes, said: “The latest stats show that over the past six weeks the number of under 40s who have now had both doses of the vaccine has risen from 25% to 65%.

"This big increase in islanders now protected for summer is being driven by couples and people coming with their friends.

“To help, we have now expanded the Vaccination Programme with walk-in clinics and rock-ups making it easier for all islanders to get their first covid vaccine."
