£4,500 available for inspiring and creative digital designs

Sunday 11 October 2020

From data visualisations to digi-inspired artwork... local tech heads are being invited to think beyond software, hardware, coding and cables to get creative with their digital designs for a chance to win one of three £1,500 prizes.

There's just one day left to enter Digital Jersey’s 2020 Digital Design Challenge, which closes tomorrow.

There are three categories, each with a prize of £1,500 available:

  • Visualising data: this could be any creative representation of information or data
  • Sensing and responding to the world: using data sources, which could include sensors, to create designs to transform our urban spaces or countryside
  • Digital and tech culture: a piece of art that uses digital tools to show how all things digital and tech influence our society

In addition, there could be up to two awards of £200 for 'highly commended' entries in each category.

A Special Award will be handed out to an entry which prominently features Jersey and an inspiring entry by someone under 16.

Participants are invited let their creativity flow, with the Challenge pagenoting "entries are open to all who are inspired by the weird and wonderful ways we interact with technology".

"The inspiration for the 2020 Tech Week challenge comes from recognising the powerful influence of digital design on the intended, and unintended, outcomes of tech projects, and the way technology is perceived by different people at different times," it continues.

“This year felt like a good time to take a step away from the coal face of digital and consider the creative and artistic ways all things tech could be brought to life through design," Digital Jersey CEO, Tony Moretta, said.

"It could be imagery projected onto a local landmark, open source data being converted into a piece of music, or an immersive virtual reality experience, to give a few examples. I know the many creatives in Jersey will relish this challenge and come up with something even more impressive. The only limit is their imagination.”

The winner will be announced on 17 October to kick off Jersey Tech Week, which is being held virtually this year in response to the pandemic.

It will then go on to feature 10 remote sessions, with figures from the World Bank, Google and Microsoft among the star speakers.

The week-long series aims to highlight the latest industry trends, ranging from AI to digital health and FinTech, and highlight Jersey's own tech offer. The key theme of the week will be the island's response to covid.
