Almost 5,000 of us face a £250 fine for not getting our tax forms in

The number of people who missed last week’s tax form deadline has shot up, with 4,900 of us missing the 6 pm cut-off last Friday.

That figure is significantly higher than the 3,000 who missed the deadline in 2015, and could mean an unexpected windfall for the States of £475,000, if everyone is fined the full £250.

The Taxes Office have described the rise in late filing as “disappointing” and have urged Islanders to get their papers in on time.

They’re planning events in the parishes next winter to try to get people engaged earlier on. Islanders have almost five months to get their tax assessments filled in and back to the taxes office before the deadline of the last Friday in May.

Assistant Comptroller Chris Le Breton said: “Given the help available online, by phone and at the Taxes Office helpdesk, it’s really disappointing to see this increase in late filers. My plea is that taxpayers who need help come to us sooner next year, in order to help avoid the last-minute rush.”
