"One meaningful conversation at the right time is fantastic"

Tuesday 26 March 2019

The CEO of a charity dedicated to supporting people with dementia and their families is urging islanders to stop in town today for a "meaningful conversation" about the support available to them.

Occupational therapists, memory specialists and other support services will be on hand to give support and advice between 12:00 and 16:00 at the St. Helier Parish Hall.

The event is part of Jersey Alzheimer's Association year-long roadshow around the parishes to raise awareness, reach out into the community and enhance the lives of those affected by dementia.

Staff from the association will be presenting their support services and offering a Dementia Friends awareness session today.

The scheme aims to change the way people think, act and talk about dementia and the awareness sessions were designed to help people learn about what it is like to live with dementia and asks them to turn that understanding into action by helping others around them.

Occupational Therapists, as well as representatives from the Memory Clinic, Jersey Library, Jersey Heritage, who developed an innovative new app aiming to take dementia sufferers down memory lane with the sights, sounds and feelings of their younger yearsthe Police and the Long Term Care Team will also be on deck.

At the first two roadshows, which took place in St. Clement and St. Ouen, the JAA team welcomed nearly 80 people who dropped in to find out more about local services and what support is available.

Sean Pontin, CEO of Jersey Alzheimer’s Association, commented: "Whether it is just one or 20 people who talk to us, that is great! One meaningful conversation for a person at the right time is fantastic.

"We hope this will be the biggest and best attended stop yet and have added more partners to make sure we can offer as much information as possible to people who pop in."
