The US Ambassador commemorated the lives of 16 US sailors who died off the coast of Jersey during WWII as he visited Jersey this week.

His Excellency Robert Johnson laid a wreath at Noirmont to remember those who perished on PT boats 509 and 503 on 9 August 1944.

He had been due to visit to lay a wreath in March, but was unable to visit due to the pandemic.

Mr Johnson's visit also saw him hold meetings with the Bailiff, Lieutenant Governor, and the Chief Minister, Minister for External Relations and Minister for Economic Development to discuss business ties between the island and USA.

He also spoke with representatives from Jersey Finance, Digital Jersey, Jersey Business and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as a number of local businesses looking to expand into the USA.

The Government hopes such ties put it in a strong position ahead of any future UK-USA Free Trade Agreement.

Mr Johnson commented: "It was terrific to come to Jersey, to learn about the Island’s history, and to discuss what we can do to enhance and strengthen our already very special partnership.

"I’m excited for what the future holds for both of us.”

“It was a great pleasure to welcome the US Ambassador, Mr Robert Johnson to Jersey. This visit gave us the opportunity to discuss how we can continue to strengthen the links between our Island and the USA," Chief Minister Senator John Le Fondré added.
