Armed alert for police after threats to officers’ lives

Monday 09 February 2015

Firearms officers were deployed throughout the day yesterday after the police received what appeared to be credible threats against the lives of officers.

A man in his 30s has been arrested, but has now been released.

The police won’t say where armed police were deployed, what the man was arrested in connection with or how many armed officers were on the streets – they say they won’t be discussing tactics, or details of the incident.

They have confirmed that the threat was not linked to any current threat in any other jurisdiction – which appears to mean that the incident yesterday was not linked to international terrorism.

The full police statement issued this morning said: “Throughout the day yesterday the States of Jersey Police were dealing with a potential threat against the lives of police officers.

“This resulted in the deployment of firearms officers throughout the day and the closure of the enquiry desk.

“At 7.30pm last night a man in his 30s was arrested. He was subsequently interviewed and has now been released.

“For security reasons we will not be giving any further details of this incident or the Force’s tactics in reacting to the threat, however this was not linked to any current threat in any other jurisdiction.

“Needless to say the Force’s priority was to ensure the safety of the public and of course our police officers.”
