ART FIX: Local songwriter pens ode to the ‘supermoon’

Friday 29 May 2020

Inspired by a ‘supermoon’ and a conversation with his young son, a local singer-songwriter has penned an ode to the moon.

Every Friday, Express is presenting a selection of online exhibitions, performances and other historic and creative content to help islanders continue getting their weekly dose of culture.

Here is this week's offering...

Luna

Local singer songwriter Rick Jones is considered by many an accomplished and atmospheric guitar player.

His music biography describes him as “One great big man, with a great big voice and great talent... acoustically beatific”.

But if you ask the man himself, he will say: “I’m best described as a frustrated rock musician who has to play solo because I’m too antisocial to be in a band. I try to do it all on one instrument... with varying degrees of success.”

ArtHouse Jersey Presents commissioned Rick to write an original track and he came up with ‘Luna’.

Explaining the meaning of the song, Rick said: "I sat under a ‘supermoon’ low tide, explaining to my young son how much power ‘she’ must have to be able to push away unimaginable weight of water and show us the lunar-like landscape underneath.

“You can be certain the sea will be back, though, just like love – and music."

Seafaris Colouring Pages

Local creative agency Snap has teamed up with Jersey Seafaris to design a set of colouring pages featuring Jersey, Carteret, Chausey, the Ecrehous, Herm, Sark and the Minquiers.

The project aims to not only provide entertainment to islanders during lockdown, but also allow them “to live the Seafaris adventures through the art of colouring in”.

Snap and Jersey Seafaris are inviting those who take part to share their colourful creations using the hashtag #seafariscolouringpages

Pressing profiles

While the Luddite Press – an artist-run print room based at Greve de Lecq barracks – remains closed, Tim Le Breuilly and Tom Parker are showcasing the work of their members and from artists further afield on their Facebook page.

Their posts give an insight into what artists have been doing over lockdown and invite islanders to discover more about the many possibilities printing offers.
