ART FIX: Prisoners create crochet blankets of support

Friday 01 April 2022

Prisoners at La Moye have created more than 40 crochet blankets to support local charities.

Every Friday, Express presents a selection of online and offline exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here's this week's offering...

Prisoners crochet for good causes

Using materials donated by family and friends or the chaplaincy team, prisoners from La Moye’s female wing started the crochet project this year, making blankets for Jersey Hospice.

They are now making blankets for Project Linus, which donates blankets to hospital wards, shelters and social services.

Prison Officer Da Silva said it helped the women both with their wellbeing and given them a transferable skill, which had been “rewarding”.

Carla, one of the prisoners, said that the project gave those involved “something purposeful and meaningful to do”.

“Being a part of this project has also helped improve our mental health and positive wellbeing by learning a new skill.”

Sarah Jordan of Project Linus added: :Over the last 12 years, Project Linus has been donating handmade blankets to children, from birth to 18, in Jersey, who need a physical or emotional hug. We've found that in addition to benefitting recipients, the charity also benefits those who make the blankets, particularly those who are elderly and alone, and the ladies in La Moye as it helps them find a purpose and feel useful.”

Last chance to see the greats…and maybe take one home!

Islanders have until 18:00 today to get close to the works of legendary artists Picasso, Warhol and Richter at Private and Public Gallery.

There will be a closing drinks reception from 16:00 – and the 100th person to walk through the door is being given the opportunity to select a work of their choice.

Music in Genius and Madness

Combined with the choirs and musicians of Victoria College and professional soloists from the UK, Jersey Island Singers are returning to the island's music scene with the help of Mozart and Britten.

They will be perform Mozart's Coronation Mass and Laudate Dominum and Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb in the Great Hall of Victoria College at 19:30 on Saturday 2 April.

Entitled 'Music In Genius And Madness', the concert aims to reflect the past two years -  the genius of the medical profession helping through the madness of the pandemic.

The 'madness' of the concert comes through the words of Christopher Smart, set to music by Benjamin Britten, the performance of which will be accompanied by Michael Wynne, St. Luke's new Director of Music, at the organ.

Jersey's Julia Callander,  is currently studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, will be performing the soprano solos, including that from the famous Laudate Dominum. Completing the soloist line-up are Brandon Low (tenor), Rachel Coombs (alto), and George Cook (Bass).

Conductor Francis Murton commented: "We are so looking forward to performing such an eclectic range of music, all mightily enjoyable and exciting for everyone."

Filmmaking opportunity as 13th Parish returns

A local film and music festival that gives islanders a glimpse of international movies not usually seen on local cinema screens, and shares sounds from afar, will be back in May, it has been confirmed.

13th Parish will be taking place at the Jersey Arts Centre from 12 to 15 May 2022.

Chaired by Tony Langlois, the festival was founded by a group that includes festival, arts and academic professionals, united in a vision to connect Jersey and the Channel Islands to the wonderful world of film and festivals, and form partnerships with organisations throughout the Channel Islands, Normandy, Brittany, Ireland and the UK.

This year, the festival is hosting a filmmaking workshop in partnership with the Off-Courts Trouville Film Festival in Normandy to present Kino Jersey.

The week-long filmmaking workshop will offer local participants the chance to work together to make a film in one week, guided by Off-Courts festival professionals. This opportunity is open to anyone with an interest in filmmaking, whether beginner or professional. The three films will then be screened over the weekend of the festival.

If you have a film you’d like to submit for consideration for this year’s festival, you have until 7th April to apply. Click here to submit your film project via Film Freeway.

For more information about the festival and to get the latest updates on this year’s programme, follow the 13th Parish on social media or click here to visit the website.

Peace and War

A JCG student recently shared a touching poem she wrote about the war in Ukraine with a Ukrainian family who recently relocated to the island to escape the conflict.

Where waste meets design

Islanders will be encouraged to explore the hidden potential of materials usually deemed to be ‘waste’ in an interactive exhibition taking place from Saturday 11 June to Sunday 31 July at ArtHouse Jersey’s new exhibition space in Capital House.

The ‘Skipton Big Ideas: Where Waste Meeets Design’ exhibition will see 14 artists and designers from all different backgrounds come together to create works from waste materials.

There will also be plenty of opportunities for islanders to get involved – from collecting rubbish to creating art from it in workshops, getting involved in repair sessions, and hearing inspiring talks.

More details will be revealed closer to the time.

...And a golden find for April!
