Autism Jersey launch awareness month

Sunday 02 April 2017

Autism Jersey is encouraging Islanders to do something awesome for autism this month.

In 2007 the United Nations officially declared that today, 2 April, is World Autism Awareness Day but Autism Jersey have gone one step further and now adopt the whole of the month of April for awareness and fundraising, encouraging people to ‘do something awesome for autism’.

It is estimated that there are 1,000 people in Jersey who are on the autism spectrum meaning they face difficulties with social communication and interactions, as well as a restricted and repetitive range of behaviours, activities or interests.

Daily life can prove to be really challenging for them but Autism Jersey works to support adults and children with autism in their daily lives, often with things that most people take for granted.

Throughout the month of April, the charity is asking offices, workplaces and schools to hold fundraising events. They are encouraging people to support dress-down days where people wear different shoes.

Fundraising and Marketing Manager, Caroline Moody said: “Whether it’s a croc and a stiletto, a Wellington boot and a flip-flop, or just a trainer and a brogue, we hope to see some wonderful combinations. This will draw attention to sensory issues and how it makes you feel a bit different as you go about your daily life.

Autism Jersey will be hosting numerous events throughout the month including a Duck Race, abseiling and their annual ‘L’Etacq and Back.’
