Barge arrives for marina gate repairs

Wednesday 31 March 2021

A heavy lifting barge is arriving in Jersey this morning to lift out the Elizabeth Marina Storm Gate for survey and repair work.

Over the past 24 hours, a specialist diving team has been preparing for the arrival of the 33-metre barge, named the Antigoon.

The barge is a floating pontoon with a crane capable of lifting up to 200 tons, and is due to arrive at the marina at 11:00. The work is being carried out on behalf of Ports of Jersey by European marine contractor, Herbosch-Kier.

The lifting of the Storm Gate itself will then take place between Wednesday 07 and Friday 09 April 2021, during which time there will be no access in and out of the Elizabeth Marina.

Once the gate is moved to the New North Quay, the specialist divers will be able to perform a comprehensive condition survey of the gate’s entrance and mechanics - Ports have added that whatever the outcome, the old gate or its replacement will not be installed back in the Elizabeth Marina until later in the year following the main boating season.

Though most of the exploratory work is to take place at low water when the marina would usually be closed, Ports of Jersey have said they will keep anyone potentially affected by disruptions updated through its usual Notice to Marinas communication process, as well as navigational warnings through St Helier VTS.
