Barrister announces St. Helier election bid

Friday 15 April 2022

A barrister and Queen’s Counsel has announced his intention to stand as a candidate for the Jersey Alliance in St. Helier.

James Corbett, who has been a Parliamentary and European Parliamentary candidate in the UK, will be standing as a candidate for Jersey Alliance, to whom he has been providing legal advice as Honorary Legal Counsel.

However, the party is yet to declare which district he will be standing in.

Mr Corbett, who is married to Advocate Barbara Corbett, lives in St. Helier and works for a Jersey law firm. He specialises in international law and has appeared in courts all over the world. He was active in local government and as a school governor for many years.

“The States Assembly needs people from a wide variety of backgrounds – but all with some relevant experience and a passion to work in the interests of the people of Jersey," he commented.

"I believe that my experience as an international lawyer working in Jersey, together with my interest in culture, in particular through serving on the board of trustees of ArtHouse Jersey, would enable me to play a significant role in the Assembly. The Jersey Alliance has an experienced team and a set of policies that are just what Jersey needs. I am delighted to be part of that team.”

Sir Mark Boleat, The leader of the Jersey Alliance, said: “James Corbett is the latest strong candidate who will stand for the Jersey Alliance in the election. His record as a lawyer, support for the arts and commitment to work in the interests of the people of Jersey, would be valuable assets in the States Assembly.

"Jersey needs a Council of Ministers working as a team who are able and willing to take the tough decisions that any government faces. The Jersey Alliance has such a team and has published its policies so that the electorate will know exactly what they are voting for. James is a great addition to that team."

The election is taking place in June.
