"Would you lycr-a coffee?"

Friday 14 January 2022

The Cog and Sprocket is looking to cycle into a new lane of business, with plans to add a coffee shop to its Queen Street store.

The plans to gear up the St. Helier shop have been put forward in a planning application outlining that around 20% of the ground floor space could be used for the coffee area.

Currently, the ground and first floor are used a bicycle shop, with part of the second floor being used for storage and part of it used for a two-bedroom flat.

In their design statement submitted as part of the application, architects Axis Mason said: “Cog and Sprocket would like to retain the use of the building as retail with the ability to use approximately 20% of the ground floor space as a coffee shop area during shop opening hours where patrons of the retail store could purchase drinks and cold food/snacks.”

As part of the store, an 8m2 alfresco area by the main entrance would also be added.

It adds that the store “sees the addition of coffee shop services to the retail store as beneficial to the business, attracting more patrons and in turn getting more people into exercise in a healthy and balanced manner.”

The opening hours of the main shop would be 07:30 until 17:30, with the coffee shop area open Monday to Saturday from 07:30 to 15:00.

The number of staff employed in the area would usually be around two at any one time, while another three would work in the main shop itself, the application said.

A decision will be made by Planning at a later date.
