Firefighters are reminding you to get your boiler checked regularly after crews were called out to a fire in a kitchen at a house in Grève de Lecq.
Fortunately the person living there had come home yesterday morning in time to call them before the fire in the boiler had had a chance to spread.
Two fire engines arrived just before 11:00 to find smoke coming out of the kitchen, but the fire itself had burnt itself out when the power to the boiler was switched off. Firefighters took off the front of the boiler to find that parts of it had burnt and melted and then cleared the kitchen of smoke.
They say it was lucky the occupier returned home when they did, as parts of the boiler were registering over 370°C and it would have been quite likely that the fire would have spread to the surrounding kitchen cupboards.
Crew Commander Andy Gallie said: “Whilst this boiler was only a few years old and regularly serviced, with the onset of colder weather we would like to remind the public to have heating appliances routinely checked by a qualified engineer, as older and un-maintained appliances are more likely to have a fault. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a fire in your home, leave the property by the nearest safe exit, closing any doors as you go, call Jersey Fire and Rescue on 999 and do not re-enter the property.”
