Breast cancer survivor prepares to spin some cash for local support charity

Thursday 22 October 2015

Her photo has been raising awareness of breast cancer around the world and now the mum-of-three who bared all after a mastectomy is hoping to raise thousands for the local charity who helped her through her treatment.

Susie Hazlewood is joining her old colleagues at Fitness First on the Waterfront where she worked as a spin instructor before she got ill to raise money for After Breast Cancer Jersey.

Susie's photo has been shared over 60,000 times on Facebook, and her story has been covered by the Daily Mirror.

The gym’s staff have all been raising money throughout October – Breast cancer awareness month – and tomorrow they are hoping to turn pedal power into even more pounds with a big 12-hour 'Spin-a-thon' starting at 6am.

Susie, who's own mum died of the disease at the age of 51, was diagnosed with grade three breast cancer last August and found out after the mastectomy that the cancer was also in her lymph nodes.

Susie has since undergone chemotherapy when her hair fell out and 15 lots of radiotherapy and is now waiting to have breast reconstruction.

She says the support she got from After Breast Cancer Jersey during her treatment was fantastic. They helped her out at home with the jobs she struggled to do when she was sick like cleaning and ironing and they helped pay for her fly home from Southampton at weekends so that she could see her three boys during her radiotherapy sessions.

She has now set up this Just Giving page here and is hoping to raise £5,000 for the charity.

Fitness Fitness will be open all day tomorrow to members and non-members and staff are encouraging everyone to dress in pink and come and support the event.
