Are you Jersey's top planker?

Saturday 22 September 2018

Shoppers, fitness enthusiasts and work teams will next week put their cores to the test in a shop window display of planking strength in aid of Les Amis.

Les Amis' annual Plankathon challenge is back and this year participants will get to test their core strength amongst shoppers at De Gruchy on 29 September.

All islanders are invited to take part to see how long they can hold the ‘plank’ position and help the charity raise funds.

Now in its third year, the Les Amis Plankathon is a fun event in which participants of all ages can take part. Participants will have to try and beat last year’s champion, Eddie John McCann, who held out for 16 minutes and 3 seconds, with Emma Parmiter taking the women’s title with an impressive 11 minutes and 2 seconds. The junior record is held by Emma’s son Dylan who planked for 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

As well as individual entrants, the competition welcomes corporate teams of four, who will be judged on a cumulative time. A great way to test your endurance, planking requires good core strength and mental determination – with the world record holder having clocked a time of 18 hours and 10 minutes.

Jason Loveless, Head of Support Services at Les Amis, said: “The Plankathon has been a very successful event for us and we hope we can tempt more into joining in, having partnered with de Gruchy this year. Planking only take a few minutes out from your busy day and you don’t even need to be wearing sports gear to give it a try! All the money raised will all be put towards helping us assist our residents, who have learning disabilities, lead full and rewarding lives.”

De Gruchy, who partnered up with Les Amis for the year, were glad to host the spirited event. Niamh Chipperfield, Marketing Executive, explained: “Our in-store events have become quite special to us and what better way to encourage people into the store than with a spot of physical exertion for a good cause! We feel that Les Amis is such an important charity for the island and we are pleased to be offering them a platform for the event. As well as the Plankathon we will have exciting new product launches, expert advice, prize giveaways, music and refreshments.”

To be in with the chance of becoming ‘Jersey’s top planker’, participants can visit de Gruchy between 11:00 and 15:00 on 29 September. Entry fees are £5 for individuals, £3 for under 18s, and £15 for corporate teams - all of which will go towards the charity to provide care and support for those with learning disabilities.
