World-renowned ballerina's time in Jersey stamped into history

Sunday 07 April 2019

A ballerina's years spent living and performing in Jersey before she achieved global success have been stamped into local history by a fashion illustrator on the centenary of her birth.

Christian David Moore has created a set of six commemorative stamps to commemorate 100 years since Margot Fonteyn DBE was born on 18 May 1919.

The designs, which were issued this week, show the ballerina during some of her most iconic performances: Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty and an indigenous goddess in Amazon Rainforest.

The miniature sheet also features her as Odette in Swan Lake.

Explaining the ballerina's connection to the island, James Dann, Jersey Post's Philatelic Production Executive, commented: “Dame Margot was associated with Jersey through her parents who lived on the Island for a number of years.

"She performed at the Jersey Opera House on two occasions, in 1972 and again in 1976, performing a variety of excerpts from different ballets on each occasion.”

He continued: "Fonteyn appeared in some of the royal Ballet’s most iconic performances. She starred in a full-length production of The Sleeping Beauty when the Royal Ballet reopened after the Second World War, as well as a production of Giselle in 1962, after which she received 15 minutes of applause and 20 curtain calls."

Her success was such that, in 1979, the then 60-year-old was appointed 'Prima Ballerina Assoluta' of the Royal Ballet by the Queen.

Jersey Post's Dame Margot Fonteyn stamps will be available from all post offices or can be ordered online.
