Co-Op says new development will create 70 jobs

Tuesday 25 October 2016

A £16m re-vamp of the Co-Op’s Charing Cross site is expected to give the jobs market a significant boost.

The old building is being demolished and is being replace with a new 5,000 square foot Co-Op Locale store, retail unit and 93 room Premier Inn hotel.

The two-stage development will see the shop open in November 2017, and the hotel in April 2018. It’s expected between them there’ll be 70 new jobs created.

Jim Plumley chief development officer at The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, said:  “We will be employing around 35 people to work in the Co-operative Locale when it opens next year and a further 35 people are expected to be employed by the hotel when it opens in April 2018. This is great news for the local economy, especially following the recent announcement of record employment figures in the island.

‘We’re really pleased with the progress of the Charing Cross development nine months into the construction phase. The new building is starting to take shape, and the concrete structure is growing in size. It’s fantastic to see the involvement of the local community in the project, with the creation of a public art display on the hoardings and the exciting plans to transform Pitt Street into a ‘River of Light.”
