The Animal Shelter is looking to rehome a "handsome" cockerel - but is also on the hunt for islanders willing to give a forever home to chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks and other poultry.

Roos-Roy is an adult tan and black cockerel, who’s single and ready to mingle.

The team at the JSPCA said the cockerel is slowly getting used to people, although he can still be nervous at times.

He can easily be swayed with the offer of some earthworms.

Roos-Roy’s ideal home would be outdoors and include “plenty of land to explore and dirt he can scratch at”. 

He does not mind the presence of other cockerels on site, so long as he has enough space to roam around and there are “enough ladies to go around”. 

“He’s been treated for mites, lice and worms so he’s ready for his date with some ladies,” the team said. 

The JSPCA rehomes cockerels every year and Roos-Roy is the fourth this year to be in the team’s care.

While the JSPCA currently want to rehome Roos-Roy, they are also keen to build up a bank of islanders that would be happy to take home a feathered friend.

“We are always keen for members of the public to fill in application forms to adopt animals from us, as it means when an animal is made ready for rehoming we can go through the application forms first. Then, if a suitable home isn’t found, we can advertise them on social media and our website," Jenna Baker, the Veterinary Department Manager, said. 

“Over the years we have had a few homes on file lined up for poultry but at the moment they are unable to take any more on. Therefore, we are looking for more homes to have on file so we can contact them if we get any domestic poultry looking for a home.”
