They’ve faced widespread criticism over the design of their £50 million ferry, technical problems and delays to their sailings and now Condor are keen to make sure they don’t rock the boat with their transgender passengers.
The company says they are happy to flush out the old 'Ladies' and 'Gents' signs on board all their ferries in favour of 'transgender-friendly' symbols after losing a discrimination tribunal hearing.
Ms Erin Bisson is the first transgender person in Jersey to win a case under the new discrimination law after complaining about the way she was treated on board their ferry back in November last year.
The panel upheld Ms Bisson’s complaint that the company had directly discriminated against her because of her gender reassignment when she was travelling on the ferry on 26 November.
In a statement released yesterday, the Company said: “Following the lodging of a complaint about transgender discrimination, we worked with the person concerned to draw up a list of measures that Condor Ferries could take to remove the possibility of inadvertent discrimination.
“These measures were then approved by both the complainant and the tribunal and we have been happy to implement all actions to their satisfaction.”
The case has led to local employment and discrimination law specialist Advocate Caroline Dutot of Ardent Chambers to urge companies to review their policies and practices and look out for possible areas of discrimination.
