Hunt is on for owners of mystery carp found at pumping station

Friday 03 February 2023

The owners of the mystery carp found at a Jersey Water pumping station have just one week to reclaim their fish.

The stray koi carp was fished out of a water pumping facility in St. Saviour this Wednesday, and is currently being cared for at the JSPCA Animals' Shelter.

"We've had lots of calls expressing interest, but none from the owner," the JSPCA said.

"So far, no one has rung to claim him. We will keep him for seven days, then he will be re-homed."

Given that koi carp are native to the island's ponds, rather than water pumping stations, confusion reigns over how this carp could possibly have swam so far astray.

Perhaps he was abandoned by a previous owner, or swept far from his home in the recent flooding? Perhaps Jersey's carp are currently experiencing a spate of rapid evolution? We may never know.

Anyone keen to reclaim the lost koi carp can contact the JSPCA HERE.

There is a common false idea that koi carp are inherently valuable. A few are. Most are not. This one is worthless. Sorry to spoil a non story. If this had been a goldfish (or a tadpole) the animal would not be at the animal shelter. ????
