Man guilty of 'terrifying' attack on couple in their home

Thursday 09 June 2022

A 51-year-old has been found guilty of punching, scratching, grabbing and biting married couple in their home, and biting a police officer after being arrested.

Following a trial in the Royal Court this week, Shawn Le Lay was unanimously found guilty of two grave and criminal assaults, malicious damage and assaulting a police officer.

Following a dispute with his neighbours on Friday 6 August, Le Lay entered their flat and began what police described as a series of “sustained assaults”.

He was firstly “argumentative”, but them became “aggressive” towards the married couple, punching, scratching, grabbing and biting them both, and grabbing the female victim by the neck.

Both were left “terrified” and with “significant bruising.”

Another neighbour called the police and Le Lay was arrested. However, when he was taken back to police headquarters, he assaulted a police officer by biting him on the leg.

Having been found guilty, he will now be sentenced before the Superior Number – which only sits for the most serious of cases – on 6 September.

“The victims in this case must have been terrified during this attack by Le Lay and we commend their courage in seeing this through to prosecution,” said PC Sophie Dines.

“We hope that this result is of some comfort to them.”
