Jersey's Bailiff recognises covid community heroes

Thursday 31 December 2020

Mask-makers, swabbers, shop workers, charities and the corona virus helpline team are among the 45 islanders and organisations recognised by the Bailiff with a new set of awards.

The 'Covid-19 Awards' were created to celebrate the work and commitment of “deserving members of the community who have demonstrated exemplary qualities” to their peers, colleagues, staff, or to the general public during the covid-19 response.

The criteria for nominations were based on the themes of leadership, commitment, inspiration, tenacity and compassion.

In total, the Bailiff’s Chambers received 110 submissions and 45 individuals and organisations were chosen to receive an award. 17 will receive the Bailiff’s Award, a gold duplicate of the Bailiff’s seal marking “an exceptional contribution” to the island community while 28 will receive the Bailiff’s citation, a certificate to recognise “special efforts” in the response to the pandemic.

A number of civil servants feature in the list, including the team from the corona virus helpline; Gillian Mallet and Allison Mills, who lead the Harbour Arrivals Testing Centre and the Airport testing facility respectively and Alison de Bourcier, who created the contact testing process for the island.

Individuals involved in local charities such as Brighter Futures, St. John Ambulance and the Rotary Club of Jersey or community groups like the Hollies Day Centre Gorey have also been recognised.

Simon Soar, the Chief Executive of the Jersey Hospitality Assocation, is among the people to receive the Bailiff’s citation in recognition of his “exceptional leadership qualities of communication, adaptability and compassion”.

The team which developed a distribution system for PPE across the island – Bernard Place, Dr Christ Edmond, Deidra Ahier, Sue Short and Nathan Wright – will also receive the citation.

“Following our request to submit individual names and teams for recognition it was a great pleasure to see so many responses,” the Bailiff, Mr Timothy Le Cocq, said.

“These awards recognise the work of so many across our community. So many people have worked so hard that it was difficult to make a choice and the choices that we have made are well-deserving of recognition for exceptional work during the pandemic. Often it was a real challenge to encapsulate all that the recipients had done in a citation of a few lines.”

Describing the 45 recipients, the Bailiff said they were “excellent examples of community spirit” that we can look to for inspiration. “It is perhaps invidious to single people out but perhaps we can be forgiven for mentioning Samuel Moore a student at Victoria College, who did many charitable acts during the lockdown and Nurse Gillian Mallet, who demonstrated exceptional leadership in running the Harbour testing facility.

“These are just 2 of the 45 and there could have been many more, I am sure islanders will think of other names that would have been worthy recipients.

“Covid-19 continues to test our community, but with individuals such as those recognised with these awards, we are a stronger and safer community. We have a community to be proud of.”
