Cracking down on Christmas crime

Friday 05 December 2014

The threat of online fraudsters looking to con Islanders out of their money at this festive time of year has led the police to launch a campaign to stop “The 12 Online Frauds of Christmas”.

The campaign started with Black Friday last week, the local cops are working with the City of London Police to shine a light on the do’s and don'ts of online shopping. They estimate that 74% of all adults in the UK have already brought goods or services online this year – and that around half of all UK citizens will use the internet to buy most of their Christmas presents.

The new campaign covers: online shopping fraud, Christmas e-cards, auction fraud, holiday fraud, loan and investment scams, ticketing fraud, donating to charity, mobile malware/malicious apps, money transfers, social media scams, dating/romance scams, and mobile payments.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Beechey said that working with the City of London Police – where Jersey’s Police Chief Mike Bowron worked before coming to the Island – had given them insight into how to tackle online fraudsters hoping to con money out of people here in Jersey.

He said: “Cybercrime is something that is beginning to increasingly affect us all across the Channel Islands.

“By drawing on the expertise and information developed by other forces, we can best advise the public in Jersey as to how to try and protect themselves with regards to this particular type of heartless crime.”
