Crisis fund raises £1.2m for health workers

Tuesday 05 May 2020

A philanthropic fund set up by Jersey’s Bailiff to support the island’s health service in combatting the covid-19 crisis has raised over £1million in donations since it launched last month.

The funds will be used to buy vital items in the fight against the virus including personal protective equipment, test kits and other gear for frontline services, GP surgeries and care homes.

Established by Bailiff Timothy Le Cocq as a central fund for public donations to help see Jersey through the pandemic, it has now raised £1.2million for the cause.

In addition to a £500,000 donation from local businessman Scott Thomas, the fund has attracted other substantial donations including a further £0.5million from Mike Platt and Andrew Dodd of major hedge fund Bluecrest.

Speaking about the importance of the Bailiff’s fund, Mr Platt said: “It’s incredibly important that islanders come together and help at this time of need and I’m proud to be able do so. I know that donations will help support our critical workers and the Government to ensure they have the equipment needed to continue work, not only on the frontline but within homes and other places of care.

"I urge anyone who is able to donate or help, to please consider it and support the lifesaving work during this pandemic.”

Commenting on the success of the fund so far, the Bailiff said: “Many islanders are giving their time and expertise to this crisis and we have seen a huge amount of community support being offered. This fund allows those wanting to donate money to do so in a way that ensures that their money will be appropriately and most efficiently used.

“Although there have been some substantial donations the fund can be used to receive any donation, no matter how much it is. I would like to thank everyone who has donated for their generosity.”

The fund channels donations directly to the areas in most need of extra support.
