Culture bites: Filmmaker shares her artistic picks

Monday 21 January 2019

She might currently be busy creating an animation about plastic pollution, but independent filmmaker Lottie Graham still likes to make time to absorb local arts and culture.

Having considered what's on offer right now, she picked her favourite ‘culture bites'.

Lottie packed everything from comedy to environmental seminars into her recommendations, which she shared with Express

1. Jodie Carney, local artist

Someone to follow…

Jodie creates stunning glass sculptures and jewellery and is also a portrait painter. Her glass tiaras have been commissioned from around the world. Get in contact if you want a stylish, entirely unique piece.

I love Jodie’s work because it’s dramatic and completely original. You can see the amount of time and skill that goes into each piece. She’s an artist with so much talent and heart, I can’t wait to see what sculptures and jewellery pieces she creates next.

Jodie held an exhibition at the Frances Le Sueur Centre for Skipton Open Studios. Keep an eye out for more exhibitions in the future to meet the artist and see more of her work.

2. Flo and Joan: Alive on Stage, Jersey Arts Centre

I first came across these two talented sisters on the Nationwide advert, singing about their sisterhood. I later saw them in London at the Soho Theatre with their comedy due act, and now, they are bringing their musicality to Jersey on the 30th of January.

Video: A comedy double act Lottie went to see in London had her laughing out loud. They'll be visiting Jersey this month.

Dry and sharp wit; it’s awkward, laugh out loud humour. I completely recommend for a great evening of music and theatre.

3. Atlas Obscura: Cartwheel Art

Going abroad…

Atlas Obscura holds unusual artistic, cultural events and trips around the world. This year they are holding events such as: exploring a secret Japanese village with artist Peter Lai and a shoe designing masterclass with a renowned fashion designer in California.

And watch out for the “Gastro Obscura” events - finding weird and wonderful food to discover...

I went to the “Graffiti Feast” in Los Angeles. We joined Cindy Schwarzstein of Cartwheel Art and Steve Grody, a featured photographer in L.A’s art museum: MOCA and the author of “Graffiti LA: Street Styles and Art”. They showed us the major forms of graffiti with one of the artists in Downtown L.A: Mr. Trixter. He showed us one of this crew’s mural productions and what it’s like to be a part of a graffiti crew.

The Graffiti Feast included a workshop in the studio of artist Nick Bonamy who demonstrated the art of the spray can. We created our own stencil pieces. Mr. Trixter meanwhile taught us how we could design our crew name with “tags”: I settled on: Donut, with my crew: Donuts Forever Universal (D.N.U) Perhaps I won’t be the most badass graffiti artist out there...

I would highly recommend any of Atlas Obscura events! Full of art, wonder and beauty of exploring new communities.

4. Littlefeet Environment

Lastly, Jersey is doing amazing things for the plastic-free community…

They hold weekly shoreline clean-ups, educational and public seminars in Jersey. Follow them on Facebook or Instagram and join one of their beach clean ups. They provide collection bins and gloves, so all you need to bring yourself, family and friends!

A healthy, clean ocean is vital for our planet’s sustainability. Projects like these are brilliant as a simple, effective initiative against plastic pollution.
