There were 31 road traffic collisions between bikes and vehicles reported to the Police last year – the highest since records began in 2008.
According to the response to a Freedom of Information request (FOI), accidents between cyclists and vehicles accounted for 67% of all recorded cycle accidents.
Both lone bicycle mishaps and those involving cars and other motor vehicles increased from the previous year by 27% and 35% respectively.
Since 2008, July has proven to be the unluckiest month for cyclists with 58 accidents registered across the 8-year period, compared with just 10 for December.
Despite being the traditionally icy month, January has seen just 19 accidents since 2008 – a sign, perhaps, of cyclists taking caution in the slippery conditions.
The information comes following a collision last week involving pedal cyclists on La Haule Hill, which injured two people. Cyclists and motorcyclists were subsequently warned against travel in the “hazardous” conditions.
