Designer sunglasses thief spared jail

A woman who stole three pairs of designer sunglasses worth £900 and a £300 leather jacket – as well as being caught with cannabis resin – has been spared jail.

Alicen McNair (55) was given a 12-month binding over order after pleading guilty to the theft and drugs charges when she appeared in the Magistrate's Court this week.

St. Helier Centenier Paul Huelin said McNair stole two pairs of sunglasses, each worth £330, from De Gruchy on 29 September last year.

The following day she returned to the store and stole another pair, worth £240.

She was detained in the shop in October, and when the States police went to her house they found the glasses and the cannabis resin, which she claimed did not belong to her.

On 30 January, she took a long-sleeved leopardskin top worth £15 from Marks & Spencer, concealing it in one of the retailer's carrier bags.

The next day she stole a black leather jacket worth £299 from the same store.

All the stolen items were recovered.

The court heard that McNair had no previous convictions, so Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris agreed to punish her with a binding-over order.

But he warned her: "You've got to keep out of trouble. Do not put yourself in that situation again."
