Digital Jersey apologises over employee email breach

Tuesday 09 June 2020

Digital Jersey is investigating a breach of a staff member’s email account, which led a scam message to be sent to scores of contacts yesterday.

The organisation, which is Jersey’s leading body for promoting and growing the island’s digital sector, has since apologised for the mishap.

Sent around 11:30 this morning, the false email read: “Good Morning, Please see above document from digital ltd for your review. Let me know if you have any further questions.”

It was accompanied by a PDF document feauturing the Office 365 logo, with a link to view a “protected document”.

Just over one hour later, Digital Jersey’s CEO Tony Moretta contacted all those on the affected mailing list to warn them against clicking on the link.

“Unfortunately it looks as if we have had a breach on one of our team email accounts… Please do not open the email and delete the message,” he wrote.

“The message has now been reported and all passwords have been changed.

“Thank you to all the members that noticed this issue and notified us directly.”

Pledging to find the cause and act upon it, Mr Moretta continued: “We are still investigating what has happened with our IT partner and will ensure we put in place any recommended actions.

“Our apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
